Seven Towers Male Voice Choir
  • Date of Formation: 06/09/1924
  • Number of Members: 20+
  • Category: Choral

Since its inception 90 years ago the Choir has been performing a varied repertoire of sacred and secular music to a widespread audience. Most of the engagements are close to Ballymena but we travel regularly to the Republic of Ireland (Donegal, Monaghan, Cavan, Castlebar) and to Massed Male Voice gatherings in Belfast. There have been memorable tours to Canada, Scotland, Wales and Germany in the past.

The 48 members come mainly from the local area, but a few travel from Garvagh, Coleraine, Templepatrick and Bangor. We sing four-part harmony and do not all read music. We practice regularly on Monday evenings, from 8.00pm until 10.00pm in the Ballymena Bowling Club and our active season extends from September to April. We believe that there is something special about the sound of a male choir singing in harmony. There is also a chance to make new acquaintances and enjoy the social side of music (Christmas Dinner). We also have our lives brightened by the director of music and the accompanist who are both female!

Further Information

We are constantly looking for new members of any age, so if you have an ear for music and would like to be in a choir, contact us. The essential qualities in a choir member are the ability to stay in tune and sociability. You can find out more about the choir, its members and office-bearers, the recent repertoire and points of contact at our website www.seventowersmvchoir.com or by contacting the Secretary, at 12 Parkmore Drive, Ballymena BT43 5DT.

Accolades

Winners of the Male Voice Section at Cork International Music Festival in 1960 and 1961. We sing a wide range of music, both secular and sacred, in four-part harmony. This enables the choir to present concerts and services of worship. Several members take on a role of singing solo or playing an instrument. There is certainly a social aspect to all of this and members get a feeling of being in a group. We do not exist for profit but donate our performance fees to Charity

Frequently asked question

If I am interested in joining your group how do I go about it?

Contact the secretary by letter, or by telephone, or send us an e-mail. All the details are on our website. The secretary is:
Mr Robert McCready
12 Parkmore Drive
Ballymena
BT43 5DT

Who is your group aimed at or who do you cater for?

We want to attract men of all ages who like music and have an ear for a tune. Members are not all capable of reading music or the Tonic Solfa and many of them learn the songs by ear, helped by a CD of the specific part they are singing.

Do I have to pay membership dues to join?

The Annual Subscription is £20, with unfortunately no reduction for Senior Citizens.

Are there any ongoing expenses associated with membership e.g. materials, insurance, fees?

No.

How often do you meet?

Weekly, on a Monday evening from 8.00pm until 10.00pm, from 1st September to the end of April.

Where do you meet?

At the Ballymena Bowling Club, as above.

Is there any criteria potential members must meet in order to join the group? e.g. experience

You should have an ear for music, be able to hold the tune and be prepared to blend with the other voices. You do not need to be fluent in reading a musical score. You should have the ability to mix with other men.

What can I expect to learn if I join the group?

You will learn how to sing in a group of 40 men. The conductor gives advice on breathing technique, pronunciation and the method of producing a pleasing sound.

Can I join the group as an observer or must I actively participate?

You could come along to the Choir Practice for one visit to listen and evaluate the music but after that you will be required to join in and test the water, as it were.

What is the usual demographic of the group, gender, age group etc?

Male singers aged mostly over 40. We value sociability. There is an annual Christmas Dinner and usually a Spring Tour to towns in the Republic of Ireland or Scotland.
